Westminster has established a partnership with the Unitarian Church in the Transylvanian village of Felsorakos, Romania. The church has provided funds and technical expertise to locate and develop a clean water source for the village. Donations from the church and the Simanton Foundation funded the water study and an application to the European Union for development of the water source for the village. In addition, the church gathered supplies for a village guest house. The supplies were delivered by a group of nine (9) members during a trip to Felsorakos in April 2008.
The pastor and family were hosted with a return visit to Spokane in February 2009. Westminster Congregational UCC cooperates with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane in supporting this congregation.
Each year, Westminster hosts Felsorakos Day, when we remember our friends in Eastern Europe. We share slides and memories from past trips, traditional food from the region (great soups!), and even some traditional folk dancing for the brave! We also take up a collection which is used to ease some of their many financial burdens. Our support of the Felsorakos UU church is just one more way we choose to live out our faith.
